Rods shift loose blockages. That's about all they're good for. When the problem is compacted grease, accumulated silt, calcified scale or a root mass that's grown into the pipe, rodding pushes the obstruction around rather than removing it. It comes back, usually faster than before.
High-pressure water jetting is different. A rotating jetting head runs water through the pipe at pressures matched to the pipe material and blockage type, cutting through grease deposits, breaking up scale, flushing silt clear and severing root ingress at the point of entry. The pipe wall gets cleaned, not just poked.

Why KT3 Drains Block Again and Again
There's a pattern in New Malden that anyone who clears drains here recognises quickly. A drain gets rodded. It clears. Six weeks later the same drain backs up again. The customer assumes it's a new blockage. Often it isn't.
Much of the clay drainage across Malden Manor, Norbiton and the older streets around Shannon Corner and Green Lane is thought to date from the 1930s. Clay pipe from that era has rough internal surfaces, offset joints and gradients that have shifted with ground movement over ninety-odd years. Material clings to those surfaces. Every rod clearance leaves the rough wall intact and gives the next deposit of grease or silt something to grab onto.
Jetting doesn't just punch a hole through the blockage. The rotating nozzle scours the pipe wall as the hose advances, removing the bonded layer that makes recurring blockages so predictable. That's the difference.
What the Jetting Equipment Actually Does
A jetting unit forces water through a hose fitted with a specialist nozzle. Different nozzles do different jobs, and choosing the right one for the pipe condition matters. On older or fragile pipework, operating pressure is dialled down accordingly. Using high pressure on a cracked clay pipe achieves nothing useful.
- A penetrating nozzle punches through soft to medium blockages ahead of the hose.
- Rotating nozzles scour the pipe wall as they advance, lifting grease and scale that's bonded to the surface.
- A root-cutting nozzle uses hardened jets angled to sever fine and medium root growth.
- On the return pass, a flushing nozzle pulls dislodged material back down the line to the nearest manhole.

What Rods Can't Clear, and Why Selling Them as a Fix Is Lazy
Rodding works on a fresh, single-point blockage caused by wipes, a build-up of toilet paper or something dropped. It does not work on anything coating the pipe wall rather than sitting in the middle of it. Selling a rod clearance as the solution to a recurring grease or scale problem is at best optimistic, at worst a reason to come back and charge again next month.
Grease accumulates in layers. Every time fat washed down a kitchen sink cools inside the pipe, it bonds to the wall and reduces the bore. A rod goes through the middle of it. The next flush deposits more fat on the rough surface left behind, and you're back to square one within weeks.
Silt in older pipes compacts hard, particularly in the clay drains serving parts of Malden Manor, Beverley Park and Norbiton. Jetting suspends it and carries it to the nearest manhole for removal. Rodding compacts it further.
Calcification coats the inside of a drain over years. Scale builds up like limescale in a kettle. Rods scratch it. Jetting removes it.
Roots are the same story. Fine root hair can be dragged back by rodding, but any established root mass needs a cutting nozzle or a rotating jetting head to actually clear the pipe bore.
When Jetting Is the Right Call
You don't always need jetting. A drain that's just backed up because of leaves or an obvious one-off obstruction may not need it. But these situations are different.

New Malden Areas Where This Comes Up Most
Grease blockages are most common in the older terraced streets around Shannon Corner, West Barnes and Green Lane, where original pipework runs long horizontal distances before hitting the main. Silt and scale recurs on the Malden Park and Malden Manor estates and in Coombe and Coombe Vale, where larger properties have extended drainage runs through garden grounds.
Root ingress turns up almost everywhere there are mature trees near the boundary, particularly in Motspur Park, Beverley Park and along the Raynes Park and Berrylands borders. After Jetting: What to Check Next
Jetting clears the line. It doesn't tell you whether the pipe is cracked, has displaced joints or has root ingress that will return quickly. If the same drain has been cleared more than twice in a short period, a CCTV drain survey after jetting shows exactly what's inside. We can run both in the same visit.
Where jetting reveals structural damage, drain relining or a targeted repair may be the answer. Remedial work, including CIPP relining and pipe replacement, carries a 20-year guarantee on the repair itself.
